    Creating innovation in lymphoedema nursing through collaboration

    Against a background of fiscal and regulatory pressure to rationalize and justify health-care interventions, there is an underlying political message that greater cooperation and collaboration would improve health-care for all. This article uses the specialism of lymphoedema to illustrate the developments and improvements in care which can be achieved by harnessing the knowledge and skills of the multi-disciplinary team, and those people with vision, who are prepared to innovate to improve patient care. The article argues that it is the experienced specialist who advances care both by innovation and by working to achieve consensus, which can then guide the less experienced generalist. Using specific examples of published research drawn from other specialities - leg ulcer management, varicose vein treatment and dermatology - the article shows how this supports the practice of lymphoedema practitioners

    Lightning tracking system

    A system is described for locating lightning strikes by developing the coordinates of a pair of lines, each of which is produced at a reference sensing station. At each station there are a pair of directional antennas which produce analog signals responsive to a lightning stroke. These analog signals are fed to a pair of integrators which integrate the signals for a predetermined period of time so as to produce the X and Y coordinate of a particular line. The analog signals are also fed through a square rooter, a Schmitt trigger circuit, and flip-flops to produce pulses for starting and stopping the integrators. The system at the remote station is similar to that at the central station and is tied to the circuitry at the central station through logic circuits to minimize the chance of error from spurious signals. Computers, printers, and plotters are utilized to plot the exact location of the lightning stroke

    This report is a User Guide to a PC tool for assessing Heavy Rainfall Warnings. Development of the PC tool formed an important operational output of the Environment Agency and Met Office funded project: "Development of Rainfall Forecast Performance Monitoring Criteria. Phase 1: Development of Methodology and Algorithms" (Jones et al., 2003). The Heavy Rainfall Warning (HRW) Assessment Tool is a toolkit for Microsoft Excel. The tool allows the user to configure an assessment framework for a particular format of Heavy Rainfall Warning, enter and save data for forecasts and ground-truths, and generate a range of performance measures and other statistics for new and previously saved data. Summary tables are presented using Excel's PivotTable feature, from which charts can also be generated. Performance measures are provided to assess forecasts of heavy rainfall in continuous variable, categorical and probability form: these include bias, rmse, R-squared Efficiency, skill scores and the Continuous Brier Score

    Hydrogen/nitrogen/oxygen defect complexes in silicon from computational searches

    Point defect complexes in crystalline silicon composed of hydrogen, nitrogen, and oxygen atoms are studied within density-functional theory (DFT). Ab initio Random Structure Searching (AIRSS) is used to find low-energy defect structures. We find new lowest-energy structures for several defects: the triple-oxygen defect, {3O}, triple oxygen with a nitrogen atom, {N, 3O}, triple nitrogen with an oxygen atom, {3N,O}, double hydrogen and an oxygen atom, {2H,O}, double hydrogen and oxygen atoms, {2H,2O} and four hydrogen/nitrogen/oxygen complexes, {H,N,O}, {2H,N,O}, {H,2N,O} and {H,N,2O}. We find that some defects form analogous structures when an oxygen atom is replaced by a NH group, for example, {H,N,2O} and {3O}, and {H,N} and {O}. We compare defect formation energies obtained using different oxygen chemical potentials and investigate the relative abundances of the defects.Comment: 9 pages, 13 figure
